On December 3-4, Cleveland Water Alliance (CWA) joined the inaugural ROADMAP Summit hosted by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with the Economic Development Administration (EDA). This first-of-its-kind gathering brought together leaders from over 40 regional innovation ecosystems to discuss advancing U.S. science, technology, and economic competitiveness through place-based innovation.

The ROADMAP Summit convened leaders and teams driving the federal government’s investments in place-based innovation, including officials from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Economic Development Administration, and other key agencies. Participants included a select group of industry leaders, policymakers, and experts who discussed the evolving landscape of U.S. technological competitiveness, emerging opportunities and challenges, and strategies for advancing national innovation goals.

Showcasing Cleveland Water Alliance’s Leadership

CWA was invited to participate as a result of our involvement in the NSF’s Great Lakes ReNEW Innovation Engine program. Representing CWA at the Summit were Max Herzog and Jeff Pu, who tabled on the exhibition floor, and Bryan Stubbs and Ebie Holst, who attended sessions and networked with federal agencies, industry leaders, and elected officials.

On the exhibition floor, Max and Jeff showcased and explained CWA’s Smart Lake Erie Watershed (SLEW) and its testbed capabilities. The team highlighted the telecommunications network behind the largest digitally connected freshwater body in the world, our smart buoys and sensors, and the beneficial insights companies receive from the real-world opportunities to test, demonstrate, and trial their technology. Their exhibit underscored the critical role of innovative technology in advancing water resource management and economic growth in the Great Lakes region.

A Promising Step Forward

The ROADMAP Summit highlighted the value of collaboration across sectors to address pressing challenges and unlock new opportunities in science and technology. Cleveland Water Alliance’s participation highlighted our leadership in water innovation and commitment to driving economic growth through cutting-edge technologies. Through the demonstration of our testbeds and engagement with key stakeholders at this event, CWA strengthens our leadership in water innovation while accelerating the growth of the water economy and contributing to national economic progress.
